1 word. Energy. Heat is energy. ( thermal energy). There are 3 main types and ways heat can travel. Conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction is when heat is transferred through touching something. Like a lizard sitting on a hot rock. Convection is heat going in a circle. Like when your upstairs is warmer than your basement. Radiation is when you get warm even though you are not touching anything. Like a sunburn. You are not touching the sun but it burns you.
sound
Boom, boom, boom. Yeah, you hear that? That's sound. Sound is energy. Sound comes and travels everywhere. It is made by an object vibrating making vibrations in the air. Sound travels in waves. Sound waves. A high, loud sound wave is close together and tall. A high, quiet sound wave is close together and short. A loud, low sound wave is tall and far apart. A low, quiet sound wave is short and far apart.
ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM
light
Light. The sun. That lamp. A flashlight. Your phone. These are all some of the many examples of light. Light is electromagnetic energy that travels in waves. The electromagnetic spectrum is a complicated diagram of waves and colors. Gamma, and x-rays are two of the simple part of the electromagnetic spectrum.
dEFINITIONS
Light absorb-soak up angle of incidence-the angle that it is hitting an object angle of reflection- the angle that the light is reflected concave-when light curves inward convex-when light curves out ward diffuse-to spread over a wide area light- the light we see in everyday life light spectrum- the electromagnetic spectrum that shows the pitch of electromagnetic radiation light waves-the way light is measured opaque-objects that let no light pass through prism-a 3-d object that splits light in different directions reflection- the throwing back of light to show an image refraction- when light is bent ROYGBIV-the color spectrum- red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet translucent-objects that let some light pass through, but blurs the image transparent-objects that allow all light to pass through Sound amplitude-volume/loud or quiet frequency-pitch/high or low sound wave-what we measure sound with speed of sound-343.2 meters per second. subsonic-relating to or flying at a speed or speeds less than that of sound. supersonic-involving or denoting a speed greater than that of sound Heat conduction-when heat is transferred through touch conductor-an object that allows heat to go through energy-everything uses it/what powers everything insulator-an object that allows heat to pass through radiation-heat transferring without touch thermal energy- the scientific name for heat thermal expansion- thermometer-a device to measure heat
